About the Book
Maya and Mahlia have front-row seats as they watch their oldest sister Maelyn achieve her goal of becoming the valedictorian of her school. Follow Maya as she teaches her younger sister Mahlia everything she has learned firsthand from Maelyn about what a valedictorian is and the hard work it takes to become one. Readers are introduced to words such as “scholarship” and “Ivy League” with the included vocabulary-enhancing glossary.

Valedictorian was written to teach readers from an early age what a valedictorian is- because you can’t strive for something if you don’t know it exists. It inspires young people to strive for academic excellence, and gives them an amazing story of sisters who are learning and taking inspiration from each other, while providing readers with practical steps to take in order to reach such a goal. Thus far, it has been selected to be in the Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Mesa Public Libraries in Arizona, as well as the Dayton and Springfield Public Libraries in Ohio. Also, Valedictorian was featured in the 2017/2018 Winter Edition of Diversity in STEAM Magazine.
Included Bonus Materials
Each copy of Valedictorian comes with two bonus inserts for additional motivation. One is a valedictorian-in-training certificate, and the other is a pull-out poster of famous valedictorians and famous salutatorians. The poster features Alicia Keys, Hilary Clinton, Martin Luther King Jr., and Coretta Scott King as famous valedictorians, and Norris Cole, Michelle Obama, Robin Roberts, and John Legend as famous salutatorians. It was important to me to make the connection for readers by highlighting the correlation between the hard work these individuals put in to attain that early academic success, and the subsequent super-success they’ve experienced because of their initial hard work.

GUY LODGE
Guy Lodge is a devoted father who has been successfully homeschooling his daughters for the past eight years. Prior to that, through intense research, he educated himself about the natural window of opportunity for children learning to read the written form words simultaneously while they’re learning to speak those words, then poured all that he has learned into his daughters. By the time they were 3 years of age, they were all able to read simple baby books from the library. Furthermore, by the time that they were 5 years of age and began their first day of kindergarten, they were all reading on a 2nd-4th grade reading level.
During the process of reading hundreds of picture books to his children, and having his children read hundreds of picture books back to him, he became well-versed in story arcs, character development, story pace, as well as artwork placement and direction. Then prompted by an experience he had long ago when he himself was a student, of finding out what a valedictorian was too late… he wrote and self-published, VALEDICTORIAN. Attempting to write a few things into existence for his daughters, and ensuring that his daughters, and readers worldwide will know from the very beginning of their educational journey what a valedictorian is; and be inspired to strive for academic excellence.
