The Publishing Breakdown

When it comes to publishing a book,  there are 3 paths that you can take. You have DIY SELF PUBLISHINGyou have TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING, and then you have HYBRID PUBLISHINGThe difference is all in the business model. Go through the slides below to see the details about the 3 paths.

DIY SELF PUBLISHING

With DIY SELF PUBLISHING, the author makes the upfront investment in themselves, which allows them to reap all of the fruits of their labor. It allows them to retain 100% of their book rights and royalties.  Which means you own 100% of your book, and you get 100% of its profit.  However, in addition to writing the best book that you possibly can,  you also have to take on all the pressures of doing everything correctly by your self.  You have to constantly pause, and take the time to figure out precisely how things work before proceeding and making final decisions on your project which will be permanent.
TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

All the way on the other end of the spectrum,  you have TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING.  With traditional publishing you get to focus primarily on writing your book. Then you get to kick your feet up and let the professionals do the bulk of the heavy lifting.  But as an astute business person, you should proceed with caution and analyze the high cost that comes with that ease.  Since the publisher is making the upfront investment,  they make the final decisions on your project, and they are entitled to the majority of the proceeds.
HYBRID PUBLISHING

And then there is HYBRID PUBLISHING, which is self publishing with professional guidance through every step of the publishing process. Allowing you to get high-quality production from experts who are focused on you. Just like DIY self-publishing, you maintain total control and ownership of everything; and there is no limits on your earning potential. At LodgeWell Publishing we understand that there are 2 things that make a significant difference in the quality of your book.  If you want a book with the high literary and aesthetic standards associated with traditional publishing, you have to have a high-quality cover,  and a professionally edited manuscript.  When you hybrid publish with LodgeWell Publishing, you get to work with experienced professional book cover designers who understands the art of visually telling a story with your cover before ever adding a word of text to it. As well as adept book editors with experience and knowledge in your specific genre.  ( Editing is SUPER important! Your book is your investment, and you should go through several rounds of editing prior to publishing. You should never invest hard earned money into a book with errors!

An Author-preneurs Must Read

Indie author is a loaded title.  It’s more than just writing books and publishing them independently—it’s about embracing the role of an “authorpreneur,” and blending the creative spirit of an author with the strategic thinking of an entrepreneur.  Authorpreneurs understand that they are the CEO of their book,  an their book success largely depends on THEM. Which is a source of pride but also a significant responsibility.

Check out our blog article below to help yourself adopt that authorpreneur mindset, get a better understanding of how things work, and to avoid some first time author mistakes.

Lack of Diversity in Traditional Publishing

In 2018, the New York Times analyzed a list of English-language fiction books published by the most prolific publishers between 1950 and 2018. The infographic below depicts the findings of that review.

The information was sourced from WorldCat’s global catalog of library collections, and the 5 most prolific publishing houses of the time were Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House, Doubleday (a major publisher before it merged with Random House in 1998), HarperCollins, and Macmillan.

They were left with a dataset containing 8,004 books written by 4,010 authors. Of those 8,004 books, 7,124 books could be identified by their author’s race. The analysis revealed that 95% of those 7,124 books were written by White Authors. Furthermore, only 11% of the books published in 2018 were written by people of color.

Writing and self-publishing *Valedictorian* has been a transformative and enriching experience for me on many levels. However, nothing compares to its profound impact on my daughters. I was able to show and prove to them by example, that we are creators. They witnessed me conceptualize a book idea that I sketched out in an old school composition notebook, and then transformed that into a trajectory changing children’s book. A book where they star as the empowering main characters; and a book that I diligently and organically connected with its intended audience. Observing that entire process have not only empowered them, but also sparked a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit within them that money simply can’t buy.
